The Weekend Audiophile X (WAX) Upgrade is our signature performance enhancement package for Magnepan loudspeakers, developed for listeners who want to extract every ounce of musical realism from their speakers while preserving the unmistakable Magnepan character. While we perform this service on virtually any Magnepan, we find that the 1.7i is the best platform for this service. Inspired by the revered X upgrades, the WAX focuses on truly customizing this revered loudspeaker not just with internal component improvements, but also with custom woodwork and fabric inspired by the highly sought after Gunned maggies. We encourage customers to provide a pair of fully functional Magnepan 1.7i speakers as the starting point for the transformation. However, we can also find you a beautiful pair as a starting point for an additional fee. “WAX”ing a speaker allows us to preserve the qualities that have made it one of Magnepan’s most respected designs while incorporating the refinements to make your listening experience as slick as WAX. Each pair is carefully inspected, restored as needed, and treated so as to keep the driver as light and responsive as possible while still ensuring reliability. We then extensively upgrade the rest of the speaker by using premium materials, precision craftsmanship, and meticulously selected components. Every crossover capacitor is upgraded using Solen Fast Caps and is hand-assembled with meticulous attention to component layout and wiring practices to minimize signal degradation. We also create our very own custom crafted baffle out of oak, cherry, walnut or the finest veneers. The result is a speaker capable of revealing greater low-level detail, improved imaging, a more natural tonal balance, and enhanced dynamics while maintaining the speed, openness, and coherence that make Magnepan speakers legendary. A “WAX”ed magnepan retains the soul of the original while delivering a level of transparency, resolution, imaging, and musical engagement that approaches the realm of electrostatic speakers. Every Weekend Audiophile X upgrade is performed by hand in our Virginia workshop using carefully selected components and proven techniques refined through years of experience restoring and improving planar loudspeakers.
